Ljubljana (aka the Capital that is Hard to Spell)

Just before we went wwoofing we spent a couple of days in Ljubljana. We arrived at 5am on a bus from Croatia, so our first experiences were of a park bench near the castle. From here things steadily got better. We really enjoyed the vibrant outdoors cafes combined with a leafy peaceful streets. It was also cool enough to enjoy some hill running up and around the castle. Mark sampled the local burek and bought a compulsory 'I feel sLOVEnia' t-shirt.

The highlight was a day trip to the Skocjan Caves, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although I have seen a few caves in my time, these were something else. There is a compulsory guided tour, which takes about two hours. At some points you are halfway up a 145m cavern, winding around the edge on a narrow little ledge. The little lights from the other tour groups makes it feel like the Mines of Moria, an association helped by the crossing of a very deep canyon on a very small bridge (YOU SHALL NOT PASS!).

Even better, when you exit the cave you are in a ~200m deep sinkhole, which you then have to climb out of via a small limestone track. It really is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking places I have been. Unfortunately, you're not allowed to take photos so you will just have to go there yourself!
